Brandi Carlile.  After my beautiful wife, who is also an artist, Brandi is a woman I greatly admire.  Not the least of which because she’s written so many evocative and deeply spiritual songs.

In fact, Brandi’s music often moves me to tears when I’m running.  So, if you’re reading this, Brandi – thank you!  And come back to Louisville soon!

I Belong to You – A Love Song with Profound Implications

One of Brandi Carlile’s more recent songs, I Belong to You, from The Firewatcher’s Daughter album (released in 2012), is especially meaningful to me.  Because, when I listen to it, I hear an inspiring love song my body is singing to my spirit.

Here’s an example of what I’m talking about, from the lyrics to I Belong to You by Brandi Carlile.

Imagine your body serenading your spirit with the following:

“I see the world the exact same way that you do
We lend our hands and take our stance
In tandem when we do
But I lied and said I knew the way
I hid my eyes from you
I still don’t know why I probably didn’t want to scare you

I know I could be spending a little too much time with you
But time and too much don’t belong together like we do
If I had all my yesterdays I’d give ’em to you too
I belong to you now
I belong to you”

Isn’t that beautiful?

Of course, hearing Brandi Carlile’s astoundingly powerful and gorgeous voice sing those lyrics make them all the more potent.  As Jewly Hight of CMTNews wrote:  “Most singers have a threshold to their vocal range, where the robustness of their voice pretty much just gives out…Carlile has proven that nature’s laws of the larynx don’t apply to her.”

Whether It Needs to Be or Not, My Body is Scared

About the song.  I’ve noticed that my body is where my fear is manifest.  I feel fear viscerally, or physically.  And my muscle systems store unprocessed fear. Fear is in my body.

Which all makes perfect sense when considering that my body is the only part of me that’s finite.  My body will one day (as far as I know) disappear – so, of course it’s scared!

My body doesn’t want to stop being me and it doesn’t want to lose it’s relationship with my spirit.

Brandi’s Song is Comforting to My Body

Which leads me to the last verse of I Belong to You:

“I’m gonna die the exact same day as you
On the Golden Gate Bridge I’ll hold you hand
And howl at the moon
Scrape the sky with tired eyes
And I will come find you
And I ain’t scare cuz I’m never gonna miss you”

I don’t know about you, but that verse fills my body with hope.  Hope that it will all be okay in the end.

Give Brandi Carlile’s song, I Belong to You, a listen.  Close your eyes and imagine your body serenading your spirit.  See if it strikes you the same way it does me.
